Third - Falling

Chapter 4
You wake up early the next morning. Surprisingly you are perfectly awake right away. After three seconds staring at the ceiling you remember that dream from this night. You can't help but let out a laughter of relief. It's not usual for you anymore, to have such comfortable dreams … Still a little smiling you turn around and take a look at your mobile to check the time. It's pretty early: half an hour before you normally need to get up. As mentioned though, you are perfectly awake by now, so you decide to just get up immediately, so you can have a relaxed start into the day.
After you shuffle out of the bathroom your way leads you into the kitchen of your apartment. As soon as you enter it though you pause short. Sceptical you approach the table and read the note placed there with a frozen face. The handwriting is elegantly neat and narrow.

“Good morning sweet Lady [f/n],
Apologies for my behaviour the previous night but sometimes angst is an effective method when trying to convince mortals.”
Damn Bastard!
“I am conscious that you still have two days of college before your holiday begins. So the morning in three days I'll return to bring you to the headquarters. You should be carefully arranged then.
Yours truly,
Loki.”

Dumbfounded you sink into the chair. “Be carefully arranged. Mortals.” Man, who does he think he is? Again there is rage burning inside you, but this time you swallow it. Sighing you grab the paper, crumble it and bin it. You turn on the radio and start to make breakfast without wasting another thought to your not-dream.

Naturally your forced suppression does not last for long. The people you meet before class talk about the collapsed S.H.I.E.L.D. establishment – that by the way was revealed in the news on the radio this morning.  You turned it off as soon as you realized the main topic of the morning and flew out of the apartment.
It did not actually help because it occurs to you, that it's the main topic everywhere today.
“Hey, [y/n]”, you hear a familiar voice calling from behind you. Turning around you spot Darcy not far away with a bunch of people surrounding her. You are not really up to meet all of them so you just decide to wave short to her before you hurry into the college. Two days and you still have way too much work. There are two assignments you have to hand in, one today and the one for tomorrow is not even finished yet.
You arrive early to the classroom and its still empty. You sit down unusually far in the back and utilise the silence to get some work down. As time passes other students enter the room alone or in small groups. As the professor finally appears and advises you to stop 'whatever you are doing' and to 'pay attention', you lose everything that held you distracted.
You still could not find out, how exactly Loki managed to sneak into your apartment; into your bedroom. And still, you find that kind of worrying. Not forgetting he plans to gain world domination. He's hot though, isn't he? And he for real seems to like me in some way - besides his attempts to choke me. You can not suppress another feeling dwelling in your stomach, but at this point you just mistake it for fear.
Why did you miss him so much this past year? No, the more important question is ... How is he so different from then? He was so sad, nearly broken. Something changed him.
It's not just his manner, you remember. He looks different, too. More mature; not old, but way older than that eighteen year old boy from that rainy day one year ago – and surely not just one year. By the way, what actually are his plans? How does one even dominate the world? He won't be able to  do so on his own. So he has to have back up. But is it so easy to find assistance for such an idea? Well … but who said it was easy though.
Furthermore, he looked so sick back there in your room. And his eyes … An image of his deep blue iris appears in your memories and then there flashes another picture of his eyes into your thoughts – this time bright emerald green as you remember them from the past year.
From these unexplainable mysteries slowly a headache creeps into your forehead. Sudden general disturbance in the class advises you of the end of the lesson. You didn't pay any attention, you must admit, and all you can do is to hope, that it wasn't about anything important any more … You get up to hurry to your next class and are determined to do better this time.
It didn't go well, either. You tried to take care of the teachers word and after some minutes even started to make notes – but when finally this class ends, your sheet is filled with scribbles and all kind of artistic calligraphy of the words 'Midgardian' and 'Loki' and 'world domination'.
“Here you are!” Appalled by the loud call, you spin around to see Darcy walking towards you through the students leaving the room. You're still not actually in mood to talk to her, but you can't just leave her alone again. So you start stuffing your things into your bag.
“Oh, yeah, hey Darcy”, you say absolutely enthusiastic.
“What was that this morning? Man, you like ran away from me!” She sits down on the table right next to you.
Sighing you take your bag onto your shoulder. “Yeah, I was pretty busy and actually I still am, so would you mind -”
“Yeah, I would”, she cuts you off loudly. Rising you eyebrows you look down on her.
“Darcy, seriously, I -”
She lifts a hand to quiet you, then hands you a bunch of papers stapled together.
“Here”, she shrugs. “Jane wants you to look through it and to give her an opinion. If it makes sense or something like that.” She looks out of the window, seemingly bored. “She said it was important. Doesn't look like this to me though.” You rolled your eyes. Everything Darcy doesn't understand is boring to her unless it does anything funny. Some words – well, many words in this case – would not fit in this category.
“What kind of anomaly shall that be?”, you ask and furrow your brow unconsciously as you skim over the first page.
“Uh, I think it's about that S.H.I.E.L.D thing that im-”
Now it's your turn to shut her. “No. I haven't got time for that.” You let the report fall onto the desk.
“Wait, what? There's holiday the day after tomorrow!” She looks totally confused. You never refused to look through some work of Jane until now.
“Yes. And I got stuff to do. See you around!”, you say while turning around, moving towards the door.
[y/n]!”
You don't listen.
[f/n]! If you don't get back here and take that report I will tell everyone what you did last summer to -”
You spin around, your hands risen in defence. “Okay, okay, shut up!” You rush back to her and grab the paper from her hands. “I do it”, you growl with unhidden wrath in your voice and hurry out of the room. You can see her grin all the way out of the school and to your car. The paper is thrown carelessly onto the front seat along with the bag. You start the engine while choosing where to eat lunch.
You decide on your favourite café not far away from school, but you don't stay there too long. After some time you finally decide to take a deeper look into the document and you must admit that it is quite interesting. You never heard of something like the tessaract before, but most of it makes total sense to you. Only when the first time you read the word 'Loki' you shut the map and stuff it into your bag once again. You don't stay much longer, but get your way back to school to find some quiet place to get your last studies down. You settle in the library until your next course starts, the report laying in your car and you are not wasting a thought to it.

As you close the door behind you, you hesitate a moment, thinking that you could just turn around and go in again. You don't but turn up the collar of your jacket against the fresh breeze. It's a cold evening and the sun nearly set by now, but you hope that the cool air can keep your thoughts clear at least for a while. For some time it works and while you walk through the streets, now and then you scribble some ideas about your current work in your note pad. It does not take too long though until your mind draws conclusions to Jane's report and unavoidably following that – to Loki.
Resigned you sink onto a bench. You totally can imagine what Loki wants with that tessaract thing and by the way you remember to point out some wrong interpretations of Jane about this to her. So that you don't forget these again you write them down too, but as soon as you are done, your mind tracks back to the black haired Asgardian. 'Asgardian' was a word you learned from that report, just like 'tessaract'. Jane did not explain it, but you could draw your own conclusions. A picture of Loki from the previous night slipped into your thoughts. His sunken, blue shining eyes. How wiped out he has looked, how exhausted …
“Good evening, young lady.”
A yelp sticks in your throat as you rush half around on the bench. You're not able to answer anything as you look up into his face. He chuckles slightly.
“My apologies for scaring you.”
“What the hell are you doing here?”, you ask before he even finished his sentence. You observe his face and realize that he does not look like the night before. He recovered fast from whatever bothered him. His eyes though … how could you have mistaken them for green? Or is he wearing contacts? Possibly. He raises and eyebrow and you turn away from him fast, somewhat embarrassed for stalking him so insolently. “You did not scare me, I was just surprised. I mean, normally the people don't just pop up behind me just because I'm thinking of them.”
He slowly paced around the bench and stops beside you. “So you thought about me?”
You look up, frowning, just to see a little smirk dancing around his lips. Then you realize his words which causes you to blush and to lower your gaze to the floor.
“Well, ur … It's just that uhm, I just wondered if you are responsible for that breakdown of the S.H.I.E.L.D. base.” Your voice is low from embarrassment and you still don't want to look at him. Where the hell did he even come from again? Is he stalking me or something like that?
“Yeah, I am.” You need a second to understand what he hast just answered and then you notice that his voice sounds nearer than before. Your eyes flutter up and with wide open eyes you notice that he leaned down to you. With his face only centimetres from yours you open you mouth to ask what he is doing – as you feel a touch at your throat, just as cold as the nightly air.
“I am very sorry about this.” His cool breath caresses your cheek and you can't think clear for a moment. Probably that's why you ask yourself why he is apologizing to you for the disaster at S.H.I.E.L.D, but you comprehend fast that he is talking about the bruises on your neck. You have not noticed them until you came home from college and you could clearly make out where his long fingers harmed you the night before. You just hoped back then that it was not as visible the past few hours. Since nobody brought it up though, you just shrugged and expected it to be gone the next day. A shiver runs down your spine when his fingers cover the dark blue spots completely, readjusting the positions from their previous meeting with your skin. This time his touch is as light as if a single pressure could make your skin shatter like glass.
You suppress the urge to swallow but turn your face slightly away from his when you feel the heat crawling up into your cheeks. You think you hear a little sigh but you can't be sure, as you need to concentrate because his presence on your throat is finally gone and from the corner of your eyes you see that he is straighten himself again.
“It's uh, not as bad as it looks”, you say and force yourself to talk calm. You do not want him to know how this small action of him just did to you. You lean back against the bench, fold your arms and cross your legs. The new distance between you and the Asgardian calms you down again.
“Since you came to see me once more, I think there is again something you want to tell me”, you say coldly, keeping the new gained and kinda comforting distance.
Again there is this smirk on his face – or maybe it is still there? But I vanishes fast and he shrugs. “Not really”, he says, walking past you. “Just finish to work through that report and keep it.”
Stunned you stare at him as he leaves. “He really is a stalker, huh?”, you whisper calmly to yourself as soon as you think he is too far away to pay attention. But you still can hear him chuckle about your words.
